Audit looks into distribution of tribal gaming funds in California

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

The California State Auditor says some local governments aren't distributing tribal gaming revenues properly.

Tribes that signed compacts in 1999 pay a share of revenues into the Indian Gaming Special Distribution Fund. The money then goes to local governments to address the impacts of tribal casinos.

But of a sample of 20 grants, 10 were issued by local governments that couldn't provide evidence or couldn't quantify the impact of a casino. The 10 grants totaled $2.3 million.

The audit also found that some local governments aren't receiving as much money as they are entitled. More than $1.2 million was denied in these cases, the report said.
